Alan Wolf Arkin, promptly known as Alan Arkin was born on March 26th, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were David I. Arkin and Beatrice Wortis, both teachers, writers and artists.
His father also co-wrote the hit song “Black and White” by Three Dog Night. His family was Jewish with “no emphasis on religion”, and his grandparents were immigrants from Russia, Ukraine and Germany. Alan along with his family moved to Los Angeles when he was 11 years old as his father gained a job as a set designer. However he lost his job due to a Hollywood Strike. Later on, his parents were accused of being communists during the Red Scare in the 50s and because of this, when his father refused to reveal his political affiliation, he was fired from his teaching job.
For higher education, Alan went to Los Angeles City College but joined the U.S Army after two years, as a signal corps photographer in Germany. After his discharge, he returned to Los Angeles and studied acting with Ben Bard and Jeff Corey.
He also joined the folk music group The Tarriers, which had a hit in 1956 with “The Banana Boat Song”.
He later formed another folk group called The Baby Sitters with his first wife Jeremy Yaffe, whom he married in 1955 and divorced in 1961. The couple had two sons, named Adam Arkin, born in 1956 who is an actor and director; and Mathew Arkin, born in 1960 who is an actor.
