Preseason Picks For Big 12 Women's Basketball: Iowa State

In his first five seasons at Iowa State, Bill Fennelly led the Cyclones to the second weekend of the Women’s NCAA Tournament three straight seasons and even reached the regional final.

Since then, there have been plenty of successes, including another Elite Eight appearance. The Cyclones have not yet won a Big 12 title despite all those wins – Fennelly has 568 with the team so far. This season, that could change.

Almost all of their starters return from a team that won 28 games, finished a game behind Baylor in the league race, and advanced to the Sweet 16. For example, Ashley Joens, the school’s career scoring leader, would have been one of the top picks in the WNBA draft had she not opted to use her COVID-19 waiver to stay in Ames for a fifth season.

“For me, it brings back wonderful memories of my time coaching Iowa State in the year 2000. This bunch resembles that one quite a bit,” Fennelly said this week. They frequently appear. They take immense satisfaction in donning the jersey. They have a lot of talent. They enjoy competing. They enjoy playing. And I believe that our fan base has a strong connection with them that we haven’t seen in a while.
