Trending Footwear at New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter
New York Fashion Week’s Fall 2022 embraces many exciting trends in footwear that completely revolutionize shoes, boots, and pumps. One of the biggest crazes on the catwalks harked back to the 80s—that of socks and knitted stockings, worn with slingback pumps and under mid-calf-length boots. Indeed, many fashion journalists reported that there were more socks than sneakers evident at the show. Designers such as Claudia Li, Chanel, Saint Sintra, Paul & Joe, and 16Arlington celebrated the ability of creatively designed socks to completely transform traditional footwear like clogs, brogues, and sandals. There were many more looks you may enjoy emulating once the summer is over. Read on to discover them.

Jazzed Up Sneakers
The collections of Collina Strada and Sandy Liang saw models pairing casual and elegant ensembles alike with cool sneakers in high-top, platform, half cab, and low-top designs bearing cute prints and accents. Collina Strada’s collaboration with Reebok saw plain white sneakers embellished with asymmetrical blue and green prints. The shoes are made of 100% recycled PES and their lining is also made from recycled materials. Keeping your footwear sparkling clean is key. After all, this type of shoe is meant to complement casual and evening looks alike. Wash this season’s sneakers in your washing machine in a separate bag, wear socks or stockings with them, and use a cold cycle and gentle detergents to keep them looking catwalk-ready at all times.
Party-Style Stilettos and Pumps
Get ready to ‘do a Carrie Bradshaw’ and spend a fortune on a pair of stilettos or pumps this year. There are so many creative, nature-inspired touches that add plenty of sartorial flair to this minimalist piece of footwear. For inspiration, check out Maisie Wilen’s strapped-up stiletto, which bore a beautiful pink rose beneath the toe line. Equally captivating were Carolina Herrera’s open-backed pointed pumps (dressed up with a delicate bow) and Ulla Johson’s high-heeled, metallic gold pumps, with beaded stones and a chunky wooden heel.
Platform Shoes
Platforms are back, which is great news for wearers who enjoy wearing a bit of extra height. Designs to watch out for include Peter Do’s platform boots (featuring shiny black leather, chunky heels, and a square toe shape), Area’s crystal clogs (which shine with a whole lot of bling), and Altuzarra’s platform boots with a curved toe line and chunky heels. Platforms were even seen on fine sandals. Check out the gorgeous green, orange, and gold designs by Sergio Hudson.
Over-the-Knee Boots
Boots in all lengths were prevalent at Fashion Week, with 80s floppy and pointy mid-calf boots seen on the catwalk shows of Markarian and Dion Lee. However, arguably the most attention-catching boots were over-the-knee styles by houses like Shayne Oliver and Maxwell. Choose from leather, suede, and brocade. Pair your long boots with a mini or long dress with a thigh-high slit.
New York Fashion Week has shown the importance that designer shoes will have in the wardrobe of any serious fashionista in Fall 2022. Just a few trending styles include sexy sneakers, flirty pumps, and platform shoes and boots. Smooth suede and leather over-the-knee boots will be the must-have shoe of the season, so check out designs by Dion Lee and other designers who have created to-die-for exponents of this hot trend.
