At the age of 14, Weaver decided to change her name to Sigourney, inspired by a minor character in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. She felt that Susan was too short for someone who was 5 feet 11 inches tall. Weaver attended the Brearley School and Chapin School in New York before arriving at the Ethel Walker School (Walker’s) in Simsbury, Connecticut, where she developed an early interest in performance art. She participated in school plays and musicals, and even wrote her own one-act play called The Frogs.

She continued her education at Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied literature and languages. She also spent some time on a kibbutz in Israel after high school. Later, she transferred to Stanford University as an English major, where she graduated in 1972.
