Teenagers love every activity except studying, i.e., playing games, watching cartoons, anime, movies, playing, and many more. Education is one of the weak points for most teenagers because they are too lazy to read and write. We had experienced the same situation when we were children; studying is not meant for me is one of the key phrases for every teen out there.
But now the situation is different, and education has become an essential part of life. Due to competition and globalization, parents know how crucial it is for a child to get a proper education.
Secrets to Motivate Teens to Study
Most teenagers are carefree and cannot motivate themselves, so here parents should take the lead. Some may try to study but cannot due to a lack of proper understanding, resulting in a lack of motivation. Reading is not difficult until you make it hard. So, here are some of the ways where you can influence your teen to study.
1. Help them remember
Many teenagers are motivated to bring good results and often try their best, but they cannot obtain expected results although they do their best. The problem with teenagers is they consider studying difficult, and their complaint is they cannot memorize a long formula.
Teens tend to forget because their brains are in the developing phase. Another reason is when there is too much to remember, they often cannot keep up. Work with your teen to find a suitable technique for your teen that will help them memorize.
Use visual aids like charts, color-coded formulas, or things to remember. Help them create a routine that will help them keep up with homework and study loads. Keep notes of important memos or formulas in different corners of the home. So, your children can remember them frequently.
2. Make it enjoyable
Most people want to be involved in enjoyable activities rather than boring ones. Similarly, while studying, if you are learning boringly, you won’t focus and memorize, but you will learn quickly if the study is fun. For example, teachers who give real-life examples and crack jokes in their class are delightful and more effective.
Similarly, as a parent, you can create ways to make learning entertaining. Encourage your teenager to discover something new by playing sports, viewing movies, or browsing the internet. So make your child study in exciting and entertaining ways so that they can discover new ideas and learning.
3. Remove Stress
Stress is one of the leading causes that will hamper your teen’s study. Usually, parents think that children do not have any form of worry and stress, but that is not true. Teenagers have different types of concerns from assignments, family and friend problems to relationship problems. In addition to that adolescence, the period is irrational and moody.
You can try to minimize their stress so that they can concentrate on their studies. Give them less burden on the study, extra activities, or training program, family problems, and many more. Ask them how they feel and take them to a family picnic, family gathering, or simply outside the home to be refreshed.
4. Don’t complain
Teenagers are highly receptive to negative reviews and will believe whatever they say. As adults, we always say things without thought, but children are very sensitive. We point out our child’s negative characteristics to persuade them to improve – we say something in a rage without giving them any thought.
The goal is to inspire adolescents, but adolescents internalize the negativity, resulting in a poor self-image and low self-esteem. Often they are emotionally conflicted and unmotivated. So if you want to improve your child’s study, then don’t frequently complain about less important stuff, be specific with negative feedback, and make sure that your criticism is crucial.
5. Don’t raise Expectations
First, don’t make your standards higher than the bar, where your children cannot meet your expectations. Having expectations with children is not bad, but setting them too high where your children cannot keep up will make them pressurize. Due to high expectations, they may develop stress, anxiety, and or even lead to depression.
Be happy when you realize that your kid is working hard consistently. You can also teach your children to start aiming from small things to bigger pictures, i.e., don’t jump to bigger goals. You can also even teach your children to set a new target after completing the previous one. Making a goal is important but don’t make them too big, which might suffocate your teens.
To learn how to inspire adolescents, you must first comprehend how they feel and think. Place yourself in his or her shoes for a moment. Teenagers are highly emotional and responsive. Talk to them and attempt to grasp their perspective before explaining your own. It’s critical to learn why an adolescent refuses to do his or her homework.
The best technique to deal with the situation is approaching them and discovering what prevents them from training. Your adolescent will be drawn to one topic but dislike or fear the other. Your child may be unable to deal with or comprehend what is being learned in class. Speaking with your adolescent will help you empathize and pinpoint the root of the issues.
7. Focus on extra activities
Be sure that your emphasis on learning does not interfere with your teen’s ability to pursue, be creative or engage in other constructive hobbies. An extra activity helps enhance an individual’s brain and personality development and helps to develop skill and creativity.
Encourage teens to play outside with their friends. Assist them in devoting time to their varied passions and pastimes. Participating in extra activities will refresh your kid’s mind, and time is invested in the growth of abilities. Further helps them to be an extrovert person which will help them to interact with others easily.
8. Help to be confident
As people say, confidence is the key to happiness and success. When you are confident, you can achieve more incredible things and set up a higher goal. Teenagers must be taught to develop confidence from their adolescence to become easier when they are adults. First, why is confidence necessary? Because a confident individual can make a good and confident decision.
For example: If your child feels too weak to study mathematics, even an easy problem, due to nervousness and lack of confidence, they will surely make a mistake. So, it is essential to teach about personality development as early as possible. Engage them in public speaking, extracurricular activities, and many more to enhance your child.
9. Provide reward or incentive
Everyone feels happy when they get unexpected gifts or rewards. Similarly, if you want your child to study hard, this is an efficient technique prevalent from an early age. Children love surprise gifts, especially if they earn them. If you reward their hard work, they will automatically feel motivated in their study.
You can negotiate with your children by offering them an item that they want if they study well. But don’t do big bluff things because your teenagers are more intelligent than they look. Go for items that they wish to buy but affordable ones. And the main thing is to fulfill the promise; otherwise, they won’t believe you next time.
10. Provide a nutritional and balanced diet
A well-balanced diet is vital for active teenagers. Teenagers need energy for studying, participating in extra activities, training, and even for entertainment. If you want your teenagers to feel motivated, give them good, tasty, and healthy food. They prefer junk foods such as chips, burgers, and others that affect health, so try to make a delicious, balanced diet.
The best diet for them is whole grains, egg, beans, low-fat dairy, nuts, and lean meats. Add more veggies, fruits, and vegetables to their diet. Such a diet will help them produce enough energy for their academics and extra activities and keep them healthy. And don’t forget to remind them to drink enough water.
Children are more attracted to entertaining activities due to the advancement of technology. Entertainment medium is increasing, so children are more attracted to television, mobile, internet, social media, and more. As parents, you should keep them in control, limit their screen time, and motivate your children to study.
Children usually cannot concentrate or fully focus on their studies because they are not confident in themselves. Make them confident enough so they do not have low self-esteem and can believe in themselves. Because unless you are confident, no one can demotivate you.
