Colleen Hoover announced the casting via Instagram on January 26. The author became emotional as she stood outside her childhood home, thanking her mother, who she says was “freely inspired” by the book, adding that her mother “got us out of an awful situation when I was little and brought us here to this house.”

Hoover also revealed that Baldoni will play Ryle, telling fans, “I just thought he had what it takes to play the character. The good news is it’s going to be Ryle”. She has also spoken her gratitude by saying, “The little girl who used to sleep in that bedroom thanks you for all your support.” Aside from Lively and Baldoni, no other casting decisions have been announced for the film, including the parts of Atlas and Allysa – two other key characters in the book.
