6 Tips to Decorate Your Home With Personal Items
Decorating your home is almost always a fun undertaking. From selecting new curtains and painting accent walls to hanging your favorite artwork to deciding how to arrange the couch, transforming the house means that it will feel more like home.
However, a stumbling block that many home decorators encounter is deciding how to show off their collectibles, heirlooms, and memorabilia without it looking like they need hoarding cleanup help. Whether your personal items are large or small, we’ve got a few tips that can help you display them in a way that can match your style.
Table of Contents
1. Utilize the Bathroom
Everyone prefers a bright and clean bathroom. Plus, it’s the perfect place to decorate with the knick-knacks you’ve collected over the years. Place two or three items on the back of the toilet and either side of the sink. You can also add a small glass bathroom shelf over the commode or along the wall, but to avoid making it look cluttered, add items sparingly and place them in a few spots instead of one crowded shelf.
2. Show Off Your Favorite Photos
Photographs capture special moments in life, and you probably have a few that you just absolutely adore. Downloading those from your phone or pulling them out of the shoebox and turning them into canvas pictures is a great way to add a personalized touch to any room.
3. The Smalls
Whether you already have small sentimental items or you collect miniature dolls and want to show them off, as long as you have a desktop, a countertop, or shelving, you can display them with style. Place those smaller items in a glass countertop display case with miniature battery-operated fairy lights, and they can complement any room.
4. Baskets
Have an eclectic taste? Turn a handcrafted basket into a lampshade and hang it above the kitchen sink or dining room table. Alternatively, place one in the entryway for umbrella storage. Baskets come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, styles, and with a variety of color schemes to choose from, you’re almost guaranteed to find one that makes your home feel a little more personalized.
5. For Wine Lovers
As opposed to just a simple wine rack in the kitchen, turn a medium-sized shelf into a dining room bar. You can paint it any color you wish, get a beautiful rug that complements the palette and set the pair against a prominent wall to really give the room a splash of style. Add some of your personality with a favorite lamp and a couple of bottles of wine on the top, and then use the shelves to show off your wedding wine flutes along with your mixed drink tumblers, wine glasses, and other bar supplies.
If you’re not a wine drinker, top it with a beautiful pitcher and use the shelves to store dinner plates and glasses. This way, you have a nice, functional piece of furniture that fits your personality.
6. For Sports Lovers
Whether it’s football, soccer, baseball, or basketball, if you have a favorite team you enjoy watching play every game each season, you can easily add a personal touch to the living room or den. Use an oversized frame to display a jersey, a couple of your vintage trading cards, stadium tickets, and other memorable and show everyone your team spirit.
There are a lot of ways that you can show your style with a bit of personalization. All you need is a bit of creativity. Take a look around your home, find little spots that you can utilize, and use the tips above to spruce up your space.
