Myth Busters: All about Skin Whitening Creams

Skin Whitening Creams

We all are well versed with the name ‘Skin Whitening Cream’. However, there are a lot of myths surrounded by skin whitening creams. You will hear people say different things like, ‘“it will make your complexion fairer”, or “it will change your skin colour”, and so on. But what is the truth? What is it that Skin Whitening Creams do? Read on to find the answer.

What is a Skin Whitening Cream?

Skin Whitening Creams is a blend of various ingredients that can help brighten up your skin. It helps treat skin pigmentation and brightens skin tone. You can also use it to remove dark spots,  age spots and acne scars. In addition, a skin whitening cream helps repair the pigmentation around the mouth and eyes. It doesn’t matter what skin colour you have. A skin whitening cream will brighten up every skin tone and add a glow.

How does it work?

  • Skin Whitening creams contain ingredients that work to decrease melanin production in your body. Melanin is responsible for skin pigmentation and is made by cells called melanocytes. Most skin whitening creams contain hydroquinone, which is known to decrease melanocytes.
  • Vitamin C, also a common ingredient in skin whitening creams, is an antioxidant known to lower melanin production in our cells & treats dark spots or acne scars.
  • Glycolic acid, which is also found in many skin brightening creams, works as an exfoliant and helps to brighten the skin by clearing away the dead cells.

Benefits of Skin Whitening Creams:

Cosmetic benefits

The main benefit that skin whitening or brightening creams may provide is a balanced pigmentation, even skin tone, and reduced appearance of dark spots, freckles, and acne scars. Skin brightening products can come in the form of creams, lotions, oils, and serums. If you are someone with dry skin, then whitening creams and lotions will benefit you. Light brightening serums will be perfect for oily skin.

Medical benefits

There are several medical reasons behind dark spots or an uneven skin tone. Ageing and sun damage can leave dark spots on the face. Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) are both conditions that cause darkening over areas of the body that are exposed to the sun more often, such as the forehead and cheeks.

Hormonal imbalances and endocrine diseases like Addison’s disease can also lead to the darkening of the skin. Addison’s disease is when the adrenal gland doesn’t produce enough of certain hormones. As a result, those with Addison’s disease tend to produce more melanin. It results in skin pigmentation & dark patches. People affected by these illnesses may use skin whitening creams to counteract the darkening effects on their skin.

The past concept of skin whitening may be used to focus on lightening the skin tone, but they have changed their mindsets and products. Some companies even changed the name from skin whitening cream to skin brightening cream. At present, skin whitening doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll lighten up your skin tone to make you fairer looking. That is not the concept. Skin whitening creams are for everyone, and they’re designed to brighten up your skin tone.

But there are still some myths about whitening creams.

Myth: Skin whitening creams are for dusky people

It is a common myth, which is not valid. As mentioned above, whitening creams are for brightening your skin & they cure skin problems like pigmentation, dark spots & acne scars. Every skin faces pigmentation and acne. Whether brown, dusky, or fair, every skin needs pigmentation and acne scars treatment. So, it will be completely unrealistic if we say that only dusky people need whitening creams. Dusky people use these creams to treat their pigmentation and dark patches, not to get fair. They don’t need to get fair; they’re a different beauty statement on their own.

Myth: Whitening cream can make your skin look fair

No cream can make you look fair. Melanin is a natural thing produced by your skin itself, and it’s the weather, DNA & humidity that decides your skin colour, so no cream can change the natural skin colour you have. Skin whitening cream evens your natural skin tone. It doesn’t make anyone look fair.

Myth: Whitening Creams cause side effects

If you don’t use products according to your skin type, it can cause side effects because it won’t work with your skin type. Before using a whitening cream or any product, you need to understand your skin type, what your skin needs & how much your skin needs. Then, if you use a whitening cream or any products suitable for your skin type, it won’t cause any side effects. For better understanding, you can talk to an expert or a dermatologist. Also, if you have dry skin, you can use a moisturising gel. Look for something like the Green Leaf Aloe Vera Gel

A skin whitening cream doesn’t change your skin colour. Instead, it brightens your skin tone; it doesn’t matter which skin tone you have. It’ll brighten it up but won’t make it lighter. Before using a whitening cream, don’t forget to do your research properly. Know your skin type & what your skin needs. Proper knowledge about what you’re using makes your skin care more effortless and less problematic.
