8 Things To Consider Before Moving To Another City

Moving To Another City

Moving to another city has never been easier. That’s especially thanks to remote work becoming a mainstay. You can dream of living in a quaint small town, a warmer climate or the big city if it suits your style. There are many reasons to move, from looking for affordable housing to being close to family. Whether you’re considering a temporary relocation or a permanent move, make sure this decision aligns with your goals.

To help you make the best of your moving process, here are some pointers you should consider before taking to the road:

1. The City Of Choice

There is no one size fits all in terms of living location. Some people prefer the hustle and bustle of the big city, others love the subdued charm of a quaint small town, while for others, the suburbs spell home in the best possible way. Assess what type of setting best suits you and let that be the first thing guiding you to your new relocation destination.

2. The Cost Of Living

Make a list of potential cities you wish to move to and research the local living costs. Now, compare it to your income and quickly determine if it’s feasible. Consider housing, food, healthcare, schooling (if necessary) and taxes. This will help you determine whether moving to a specific place makes sense to you financially. Moreover, plan on having a few months of savings to act as a savings cushion for any unforeseen expenses that typically come when moving cross-country.

3. Housing

Once you’ve set your mind on location, finding housing is one of the most essential aspects of your living situation. Your choice of housing depends on how long you’re planning on staying in this city – if it’s a temporary stay, you could go for a rental or if you’re looking to put down roots, even homeownership down the line. Each housing style comes with its challenges, but your choice ultimately hinges on your personal preferences and finances.

4. The Community

Besides the type of home you’re choosing to live in, neighborhood amenities also play an important role in shaping your day-to-day life. Are you looking for a strict city setting, or you’re interested in living in a suburb that offers city-like perks. Safety, walkability, proximity to dining and entertainment venues, access to outdoor activities as well as schools are some types of community features that rank high among preferences as most people prefer their environment to offer a rich and well-rounded living experience.

5. Transportation

Even if you take job commuting out of the picture, you still have to consider the local infrastructure. How far is everything in the city? Will you be car-dependent or you’re looking to also use local transportation? Getting to your desired destinations easily around the city is essential. For example, if you go for a big city like NYC or Chicago, you can practically live car-free, but small towns and suburbs might require more car trips to get around. Make sure you choose according to your lifestyle preferences.

6. The Weather

Weather is an essential element in our lives. It affects our mood and mindset. For instance, if you’re used to living in a warm and sunny climate, adjusting to a colder one where you get less sun might be challenging. Additionally, the type of climate you live in directly impacts your utility bills. For instance, living in a northern climate might mean you have a larger heating bill to foot as the colder weather can last up to half the year. Therefore, make sure to include weather-related expenses in your budget.

7. The Moving Process

Once you’re picked your moving destination, it’s time to consider getting there. Think about which type of moving process it will be, from establishing a moving budget to the type of moving services you’re using. Decide whether you’re going to hire professional movers or if you’re going to DIY your move. You could also choose portable moving containers, a hybrid between the two.

Create a Moving Strategy

Moving is a great time to part with unwanted items. Toss damaged belongings, donate or sell gently used ones so you can easily manage your home while you organize your move.

Next, strategize your packing. Start by getting moving supplies ahead of time. You can also start packing weeks ahead to ease your load. Put all non-essential clothing, home décor, and even some pieces of furniture packed so that you have less work on your hands when moving day approaches. Last, but not least, prepare a ready-to-move bag for the moving day. Pack clothing, toiletries, shoes, medications, trash bags, tools, paper towels and bed linens.

Send Your Belongings Before Getting There

Who says you need to arrive at your new abode at the same time as your belongings? To make moving day easy on you, you can send them ahead of time and have them put in a storage unit close to your new home. This way, you can gradually retrieve furniture and other household items from your unit to organize your home chaos-free.

You might also find using your storage useful after your move, especially if you live in a hot and humid climate like the South. For instance, if you live in Space City, you can rent a Houston unit to store seasonal and bulky items instead of keeping them in your garage or in another area of your home where they can be exposed to the damaging effects of heat and humidity.

Plan Your Trip

Determine ahead of time how you’re getting to your new city. Decide whether you’re driving or flying. Book your ticket in advance if you’re flying and travel lightly but do prepare a bag of essentials so you have everything you need on hand when you get to your new home. Additionally, order takeout so you won’t have to worry about cooking in a new place after a potentially tiring moving day.

8. After The Move

Once you’re settled into your new home, make sure to transfer your utilities so you can have all your services running, including your Wi-Fi, water and sewage, electricity, gas and more. Research the providers in advance so you can have service as soon as you move in – a good practice if you’re moving from out of town. Moreover, update your new address and your driver’s license (for out-of-state moves) and schedule your first visit to the vet if you’re a pet owner.
