7 Tips on How To Deal With Colic
For doctors, baby colic is still an unexplained mystery, and for young parents, it is often a reason to worry and lack faith in their parental competence. However, before helplessly wringing your hands over a crying baby, it is worth learning more about how to deal with it. Here are seven effective methods for dealing with baby colic.
Table of Contents
1. Warming the Tummy
Some babies find relief from a warm bath. Put your little one in the bathtub and pour warm water over its tummy, gently massaging it. This will help relieve unpleasant cramps. It is worth using essential oils intended for babies. The lavender aroma has a relaxing effect and may work well.
Instead of a bath, you can treat your baby with a warm compress made of a diaper or hot water bottle. A bag with cherry pits may also work well since cherry pits heat up less but give off heat longer than water.
2. Putting the Baby on Its Tummy
Lay the baby on you so that its tummy touches your belly. In this position, the infants often manage to expel gas. Besides, the baby will calm down, feeling the parent’s warmth. Massage your baby’s back gently to help expel gas.
3. Hugging and Wrapping
When the baby cries and is restless, wrap it in a blanket. In a tight space, babies feel safe because it reminds them of the conditions in the mother’s womb. Hug the wrapped baby tightly — the crying should stop. Carrying and cuddling satisfy the basic need for closeness and gives the baby pleasure. Babies who are cuddled and carried cry less than those whose parents don’t want to carry them.
4. Tummy Massage
Give your baby an anti-colic massage. At first, the movements should be gentle, clockwise. Then massage its tummy alternately with your left and right hand. Make circular movements with the left hand, and semicircles with the right one, from the outside to the inside of the belly. Also, try leg exercises. Put the baby on its back and alternately curl and straighten its legs to support the work of its intestines.
5. Calming sounds
Babies are often soothed by monotonous sounds such as the hum of e.g. a hair dryer, vacuum cleaner, TV, or another device. The sound effectively distracts the infant from the ailments, and at the same time, its uniformity calms the baby down, allowing it to relax abdominal muscles.
6. Maintaining Daily Routine and Limiting Stimuli
Let’s face it, the first weeks and even months with a baby are chaos and armageddon. Suddenly there are so many things to handle — breastfeeding or bottle feeding with a baby formula from Europe, changing, calming, putting to sleep, and so on. Add to this family and friends visits, walks, doctor visits… Trying to introduce a regular daily rhythm from the beginning. Chances are that your baby will cry less and be calmer with the daily routine.

7. Pharmacology
We recommend trying the above-mentioned methods, and only when these do not work, reach for pharmacological preparations. Pharmacological preparations for children with ailments such as colic, when properly selected, are safe, do not cause side effects, and their composition is based only on ingredients of natural origin. Make sure to check with your pediatrician before choosing any medicines or a European formula for infants.
When trying to help your little one, do not forget about yourself. Do not be afraid to leave the child with its dad and leave the house, even for an hour, even for a lonely walk. A bit of mental rest will help you catch the necessary distance and approach the subject rationally instead of constantly blaming and feeling down.
