Has Your Office Implemented An Energy Efficiency Taskforce?
Ensuring your office is energy efficient benefits both you and the environment! Becoming more energy efficient means using fewer utilities than you would typically use. This results in less of the Earth’s resources being depleted and lower utility bills.
One of the hardest parts of making practical changes in the office is ensuring everyone is on board and implementing the new policies. A good way to tackle this challenge is to create an Energy Efficient Taskforce.
This group will be responsible for making sure that everyone in the office is aware of the necessary measures and changes being made. They can also take the initiative and research new ways to reduce energy usage in the office. There are several effective and simple ways to make the office energy efficient.
This will be the task force’s primary tool and leading responsibility. Reminders are one of the best ways to keep the staff constantly aware of what needs to be done, including making use of a preferred energy supplier as part of their to-do list. Several areas can be made more energy efficient with the help of a task force:
Lighting is where you can quickly implement simple changes for a noticeable difference in energy usage.
One of the best ways to reduce energy usage is to switch to energy-efficient lighting and lights with dimmer switches. LED lights use less energy than traditional light bulbs and have a longer lifespan.
You may also want to use motion-activated sensors in some areas. In the common areas and areas that are the busiest, the best thing to do is make sure everyone remembers to turn off the lights.
Leaving lights on in empty rooms or offices overnight can be an unnecessary waste of energy and money.
The task force can send out reminders and put up posters reminding staff to turn off lights when not in use. For example, turning off the lights in the break room if it’s empty. They can also create a rota of people responsible for ensuring that all lights are turned off at the end of the day.
Use Equipment And Appliances Efficiently
Another easy way to make the office more energy efficient is to turn off equipment when not in use. This also includes all appliances in the office, such as office equipment like printers and kitchen appliances like fridges and microwaves.
It’s better to just switch appliances off when they’re not in use instead of leaving them on standby. This means switching them off at the end of the day at the plug point. This can also mean turning off computers and office equipment during lunch breaks, for example.
Also, ensure that all staff are aware of which switches turn off the equipment. Reminders like posters and signs are a great way to do so. This is also another place where a rota might be useful.
When it comes to your dishwasher, only use it when it’s full. This uses the water most efficiently; dishwashers are also more efficient for reducing consumption than handwashing. Another way is to only boil a full kettle when everyone wants a cup of coffee instead of using it multiple times.
Turn The Tap Off
A lot of water is wasted when the tap is left to run while we go about our usual routines. It’s definitely less convenient, but turning the tap off can reduce the amount of wasted water. There are a few areas where this can be applied:
When washing the dishes, using a large bowl full of water to wash and rinse your dishes can reduce water usage. When it comes to washing hands, not leaving the tap running as one soap up can reduce water usage.
The task force can make signs reminding people of these measures. Small signs and posters can also be useful here.
Making spaces energy efficient is currently trendy, with good reason. The main benefit for businesses in becoming energy efficient will reflect in their utility bills. Creating an energy-efficient office space doesn’t have to be anything too difficult or expensive.
You can create your own in-house Energy Efficiency Taskforce to implement simple changes around the office. The involvement of the actual office workers will determine just how successful these simple measures really are.
