11 Ways to Prevent Household Fires: The Definitive List
If you’ve ever experienced a house fire, then you know how terrifying the event can be. The smoke and heat are not only physically harmful but psychologically damaging as well. If you want to prevent your home from catching on fire, there are many things that you should do. In this blog post, we will go over 11 ways on how to prevent household fires so that your family is safe!
Read all labels before using any new products in your home. There are many common household items that can cause fires, and you should be aware of them.
Table of Contents
1) Smoke detectors:
these will detect smoke and warn you if a fire has started so you have time to escape the house.
- Install a smoke detector on every level of your home. If you have pets, make sure that they are not blocking the detectors and setting them off with their playtime!
- Change batteries in all of your detectors once per year. This is an easy but crucial step to ensure safety for you and your family.
- Check each detector monthly to ensure it is working properly and not just going off out of habit.
2) Matches or lighters:
never leave this lit as they can easily ignite something else.
3) Candles:
these should be set in a place where they won’t come into contact with anything that could catch fire. They are best used during the evening when everyone is home so you have someone to watch them.
4) Electrical appliances:
keep cords away from any flammable items or anything that could cause a fire. This goes for any electrical appliance, whether it is the stove or a toaster.
- If you have an extension cord, make sure that it is in good condition and not too warm. This can happen if the cord isn’t plugged into a surge protector or another electrical appliance.
- Don’t overload your circuits; this will only end up causing more problems with electricity .
- Keep appliances away from water sources (like sinks) or anywhere that they could come into contact with water.
5) Heating appliances:
this includes your water heater or wood stove and you should always be careful when using them
6) Plugs/outlets:
these need to have proper clearance from combustible items like curtains or furniture
7) Unplug any appliances that you are not using.
8) Hazardous materials:
these need to be kept in a place where no one, including the kids or pets, can get to them
9) Cooking oils/butter:
these should never be left on the stove while unattended and they should always cool before being discarded
10) Keep clean;
clutter and dirt can cause fires to start, so keep everything tidy
11) Have an escape plan for each room of the house where you can meet up if there is a fire or other emergency situation. The best place to have this meeting spot is outside on the ground floor
