What’s Trending In Interior Design In 2021

Trending Interior Design in 2021

Interior design is on everyone’s minds in 2021. Given that we have spent the majority of our time in the past year staring at the walls, it’s only natural our mind wanders to the possibilities. What if we changed the paint? What if we moved the furniture in our living room? Could the kitchen use a facelift?

There are many ways to spruce up the inside of your house – it doesn’t necessarily have to be big and expensive, either. Small changes can go a long way too. But what are some of the best interior design trends of the year, so that no matter what changes you make, you’re keeping up with the times?

Hanging wall art

One of the biggest things that creatives of all types are doing this year is creating more. And because in many places, purchasable art at home decor stores is limited – they’re hanging up their own amazing wall art. This is a great way for any artist to appreciate their own work and have a lot more fun with the creative process. You might even find that your work improves. For example, photographs taken digitally offer a completely different feel when framed and hung on the wall. The same could be said for paintings when the canvas is dry and it’s hung.

Funky wallpaper

Looking for something a bit different than your traditional space-expanding white/cream-painted walls? Look no further than the latest trend sweeping (particularly millennial) households – funky wallpaper. If you have some already colorful furniture, why not go the whole 80’s hog and get some funky, colorful patterned wallpaper.

Cheery paint

However, if you’re not into wallpaper and simply must paint the space – then try to pick something other than white, which is cheerful and happy – we all need a bit of cheering up at the moment. Shades of blues and greens are all the rage at the moment with your interior decorating, as earth-tones take over from the vibrancy of reds, oranges, and yellows, or the bright space-expanding white.

Swap outdoor luxuries

One of the best things you can do for yourself this year is treating your home to luxurious items. That hammock chair you’ve been looking at for the living room? All the money you’re not spending on overseas trips can now be spent on things that make the home better. The new kitchen table? The big bookshelf? The luxuries need not be big, either, maybe it’s a new scented candle set or a standing lamp that you’ve been eyeing. Small changes to space can make a huge difference.

Supporting small businesses

No matter where you live, there’s someone who has a small business that deals in some sort of decor that would be a great fit for your home. Instead of going to the home furniture store, why not hire a local carpenter to build you an outdoor bench set?

Check online for small landscapers and have them come and fix up the gardens. Choose a local painter. Maybe even buy some photographs from your favorite local photographer, rather than buying something that costs $20.00 and has been printed a million times.

If there’s one thing that we’ve learned from COVID-19, it’s that the little guys continue to struggle. If you can this year, be sure to support local businesses over the big-box stores.

Making statements

Homeowners are no stranger to making statements with their furniture choices. Whether that’s outside or inside the home, most homeowners will have a ‘statement piece’. This trend doesn’t look to be disappearing in 2021. Maybe your statement piece is a large painting. Perhaps it’s a modular piece of furniture. The point of a statement piece is to, well, make a statement about your space.

One of the things being stuck inside has taught us was how to be more appreciative of the space in which we live. Pre-COVID-19, we were all so busy with our lives, running in and out of the house and not really spending too much time in our homes. Now that we’ve had so much time in our homes, we should take advantage and make our homes a place that we truly want to be in.
